Ways to Deal with the Drought

A study in 2020 found about a third of all water in Los Angeles is used outdoors. Studies show that on average, half of the water used outdoors is wasted. The leading cause of waste is incorrectly set and poorly managed irrigation controllers. The second biggest cause of wastage is broken irrigation equipment that goes undetected. There are a few basic things you can do to make a big difference in your water use.

Watering Days

Know your watering day and time restrictions to stay in compliance with the Emergency Water Conservation Plan Ordinance. The Emergency Water Conservation Plan Ordinance was created to discourage water waste. Based on the last number of your street address, your watering days are as follows:

ODD: Mondays and Fridays

EVEN: Sundays and Thursdays

Limit outdoor watering to 2 days a week. 8 minutes / station / day or two 15 minute cycles / day with water-conserving nozzles. ALL outdoor watering is prohibited from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. regardless of the watering day.

Keep in touch with LADWP: make sure your contact information, including email, is current on your account. Consider joining LADWPs social media accounts, such as Facebook, so you can get timely information about weather conditions, rebate programs and changing drought conditions.

During a drought it is critically important that you inspect your outdoor irrigation system regularly to ensure your system is performing optimally and without leaks. Click here for a simple tutorial on how to perform an outdoor landscape audit.
